SWIM SUITS AND COMPRESSION TAPE

Confirmation of Swim Suit Apparel rules at Y National Swim Championships.

YMCA Competitive Swimming follows the Technical Rules and Regulations of USA Swimming.

As a reminder to coaches of teams attending the YMCA National Championships, both Short Course and Long Course, the rules pertaining to SWIMWEAR (Rule 102.8) will be in effect.

Specifically, Rule 102.8.1 C contains the provisions that suits must comply with "...FINA swimsuit specifications." The FINA specifications (FINA Rule 4.1.6) state that "no zippers, or other fastening system is allowed" and these specifications will be observed.

The Chair of USA Swimming Rules Committee has determined that suits with a "tie back" are considered to have a "fastening system," and are therefore non-compliant with the FINA rule. Competing in such a swimsuit is considered a violation of rule 102.8.1C and would result in a disqualification.

Additionally, your attention is directed to Rule 102.8 E. "Any kind of tape on the body is not permitted unless approved by the referee." The use of "Kinesio" or "Compressive tape" will not be approved by the meet Referee, consistent with the current guidelines and rule 102.8 E of USA Swimming. Kinesio tape is considered to aid the swimmers performance, which is specifically prohibited by rule 102.8 E.
