FINA has published the initial list of approved swimsuits and the USA Swimming Rules and Regulations Committee has issued an Interpretation stating that only suits on the approved FINA list may be worn in USA-S sanctioned or approved meets. As we follow the USA-S technical rules, and generally have our major meets approved, we will follow that Interpretation. We will again allow for non-swimwear modesty apparel (e.g., athletic supporters for men and sports bras and bikini pants for girls), but two swimsuits may not be worn in any case.
There have been a number of rules changes relating to swimwear proposed to the Rules and Regulations Committee, which will be voted on by the House of Delegates at the Annual USA-S Convention in September. The proposed rules changes will be posted on the USA-S website later this month. Everyone is encouraged to review these proposals and make their views known to their local LSC delegates to the Convention.

On June 19th, FINA released a second list of approved swimsuits. Pursuant to the guidance above, suits on this second list will also be permitted at the YMCA Long Course Swimming and Diving Championships next month.

Set forth below is the Statement from USA Swimming President Jim Wood on the FINA Swimsuit Ruling:
"USA Swimming stands firm in its desire to preserve the integtrity of the sport, and for that reason, we will continue to push for stricter restrictions on swimsuit technology. We are highly disappointed by the FINA ruling released Monday, but in order to keep USA Swimming's rules in compliance with those of the international governing body, we will immedeiately adopt the revised list of approved swimsuits. Moving forward, we encourage FINA to carefully examine this matter in order to ensure the best possible future for our sport."
The YMCA NAtional Swimming and Diving Advisory Committee supports and endorses the above statement, and as we follow USA-S technical rules, we will also adopt the revised list of approved swimsuits.

Ed,
Given your June 26th posting, should I presume YMCA Swimming will also follow USA Swimming's expedited, October 1st changes to acceptable swimwear policy (http://usaswimming.org/USASWeb/ViewNewsArticle.aspx?TabId=0&Alias=Rainbow&Lang=en&ItemId=2621&mid=2943)? - Ernesto Edited by emartinez - Sep/22/2009 at 10:04am |

Ed,
Is it a safe assumption that YMCA is following the USA suit guidelines as of 1 Oct 09 ahead of the FINA 1 Jan?

As the YMCA follows the USA-S technical rules, we will follow their latest changes as of the October 1, 2009 date approved for USA-S adoption at the Convention.

What will be done about the issue of suit requirements for religious/medical reasons?

The procedures set up last year by the USA-S Rules Committee to handle religious and medical exemptions have been adopted into the rules. Such exemptions require the approval of the USA-S Rules Committee Chair. Anyone so approved for USA-S purposes will also be approved for YMCA purposes. Such swimmers should have a copy of their exemption with them at all meets.
