YMCA of the USA Competitive Swimming and Diving Fo: USA certification

   There was a posting in 2007 asking about circumstances when a USA certified official could work at a YMCA closed meet.  Would you explain "closed" as used in that context?  Also, is this guidance still applicable today (that the USA official can work but not as the referee and only when there are also two YMCA certified officials working)?

	Jim, a YMCA closed competiton meet is a meet involving only YMCAs and is used as a qualifying meet for higher level YMCA meets. It can be a dual meet (two YMCA teams) a tri-meet (three YMCA teams), a YMCA invitational meet (with multiple YMCA teams) or a YMCA champiopnship meet, but it can only involve YMCA teams. As to the guidance issued in 2007, it is still in effect. Ed Miller National Officials' Committee Chair

	Thank you (belatedly). Your answer was very helpful. I would like to follow up with another scenario. Our league has both YMCA teams and USA teams and will have its championship meet in early February. Is there any reason not to assign officials based on experience rather than on certification within YMCA Swimming? Thank you, Jim

	I am not sure I understand your question. I would normally always assign people based on their experience in the positions. Are you asking if a person certified at YMCA Level I, who may also be a USA-S starter or referee, could serve as a referee? My first question there would be why, if that person was already a USA-S starter or referee, did they take a YMCA Level I clinic instead of going directly to Level II? If that is the situation, as far as assigning people, if it is a YMCA meet, you could use the "Level I" official as a deck referee, as long as a YMCA Level II official served as the Meet Referee. Does that answer your question? Ed
