I recently completed Level II training and test and decided to also go for the USA certification as well. My daughter swims for a NJ YMCA as well as a New York City parks department team, so I thought the additional certification might come in handy. Can you explain the difference between the two certifications? aside from the background check and athlete protection test, is there any additional training/tests needed for USA. When it comes time to renew, do I renew both? Appreciate any guidance/clarification. thanks

Congratulations on passing your Level II training and test. I hope you are enjoying your apprenticeship and well on your way to certification, if it has not already been completed. Your USA Swimming officials certification will either be granted by New Jeersey Swimming, or Metropolitan Swimming, depending on which LSC you choose to register with. Each one may have slightly different requirements for certification and you will need to contact the LSC Officials Chair to learn what those requirements are. This may have a bearing on which LSC you choose to join.Either LSC may grant you some level of credit, or reciprocity, for your achievements thus far in respect to the clinic, test and completion of Y certification.
Registration, and certification, is a separate process for both YMCA and USA Swimming. Renewal of certification is, likewise, a separate process for each. The same is also true if you become a High School Official or NCAA official.
Fortunately, YMCA follows the USA Swimming rule book, which makes training officiating on both decks virtually identical when it comes to the technical rules of swimming.
