After diving in to start the event how far can the swimmer stay under the water is there a distances they have to surface

There are very specific rules for each stroke concerning how long the swimmer may be submerged after the start nad each turn.  See Rules 101.2.2, 101.3.2, 101.4.2 and 101.5.2 in the 2012 USA Swimming Rule Book for guidance.
