All officials need to read the new Guide and FAQ's concerning the September 1, 2006 change to using USA-S Technical Rules.

If you have questions about this or any other aspect of YMCA Swimming and Diving Rules and Officiating please post them in this forum.

Carlos, you can either go to the Y-USA website (www.ymcaexchange.org) and access the schedule there, using YMCA as your user name and 9622 as your password, or you can go the the YMCA Competitive Swimming website (www.ymcacompetitiveswim.org).

As this FAQ is dated 2006, is there any chance that someone is (or will be) updating it?  At this point, I'm particularly curious about two entries in the current version as posted regarding age eligibility (Dec 1st?) and minimum water depth for starts.  The current posting indiciates age as of 1 Dec, not as of first day of event is the determining factor.  Also, minimum depth for diving in per USA Swimming is 4 feet, no?  But the FAQ posting says 5 feet.  Hhhhmmmm.

I look forward to your reply.

Cheers,
John

John, we have left this posting up for historical informational purposes because it does answer some questions that people still have.

As to your question on water depth, that is going to be a permanent difference between the two organizations unless USA-S adopts the five foot minimum depth for racing starts.  This question was addressed again recently in another post in this Forum, and the YMCA position is absolutely clear and unchanged that YMCA teams must not allow or take part in racing starts in pools where the water depth is less than five feet.  A reiteration of this policy is going out in the next YMCA Aquatics Newsletter, as some people seem to have forgotten the rule.

As to the age rule, that is left to the discretion of the local YMCA swim leagues.  In order to facilitate the administration of their dual meet programs, many leagues have chosen a set cut-off date, normally December 1st, for purposes of their dual meet teams.  Some leagues also keep that date for their season ending championships, whereas other leagues use the age on the first day of the meet.  This is a local decision, made by the local League Committee.  Again, that will probably be a permanent difference between the two groups.
