USA SWIMMING FOUNDATION AND US OLYMPIAN MEL STEWART WILL BE A PART OF THE YMCA NATIONALS.
The USA Swimming Foundation is proud to be a part of the 2013 YMCA Short Course Nationals. We applaud all of the athletes that will be competing in Greensboro, and wish everyone a safe and fun meet! We hope that everyone will visit the USA Swimming Foundation booth in this year's Athlete Village to learn more about how we save lives and build champions in the pool and in life. We will have great information, fun giveaways, and autographs books to collect the signatures of all your swimming heroes. On Thursday and Friday, the USA Swimming Foundation is proud to feature three-time 1992 Olympic medalist Mel Stewart. Stop by to meet Mel, see a genuine Olympic gold medal, and get an autograph on Thursday, April 3rd or Friday, April 4th at the USA Swimming Foundation Booth located near the Athlete's Village. About US Olympian Melvin Stewart Swimming Biography: Stewart is the most prolific 200m butterfly swimmer of his era. He holds the record in the USA for winning 14 national titles in this event, the most national championships in one event. In his first Olympic Games at Seoul in 1988, he was placed fifth in the 200m butterfly. Stewart held the world record from 1991 to 1995. He won the 200m event at the 1991 World Championships in Perth, defeating Hall of Famers Michael Gross of Germany and Tamas Darnyi of Hungary. He became the gold medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in Olympic record time. He won a second gold as a preliminary heat member of the 4x100m medley relay and a bronze on the 4x200m freestyle relay. What Stewart is Doing Today: Stewart, aka "Gold Medal Mel" is the National Team Alumni Ambassador to the USA Swimming Foundation. He is the co-founder of SwimSwam.com, a swimming news and lifestyle website. Stewart's work with SwimSwam.com keeps him on the road covering more than 230 swimming competitions per year. "Watching swimmers race and reach new personal goals is like a religious experience for me," Stewart said. "The global swimming community is my home and family, always a joy to be a part of." He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife Tiffany, and their daughter Bayley. Who Stewart Followed at the London Olympics: "The rise to fame of South African Chad Le Clos was thrilling to witness in London. Despite being so young, Le Clos displayed grace and humility after beating Michael Phelps, the greatest 200m butter flyer in history. Passing the torch is a sacred moment. Phelps passing it to Le Clos was moment that I'll never forget. It's makes me proud to be a part of this great swimming tradition."
